NIMH practices the unique system of allocating patients to Consultant Psychiatrists according to their area of residence. When patients are admitted to the same ward each time, they are more familiar with the staff and the surroundings which help to calm down the patient. Admissions include patients brought directly by families, those who voluntarily seek treatment, those brought by police, airport office, direct admissions from the prisons, and transfers from other healthcare instructions.

The patients who are not aggressive or violent are directly admitted to the acute wards. If inward treatment is not needed, they are referred to the psychiatric clinics closer to the place of residence. Aggressive or violent patients are admitted to the PICU for the initial management & thereafter transferred to the relevant acute wards. Since aggressive and violence patients can’t be kept in the OPD, there is a special entrance to the PICU where the patients can be directly taken in.
